The Party Was, Ahem, Understated

Yesterday, Ngila was inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. The fact that my computer is showing Honor as being misspelled is their fault. This is a big deal here. The kids who are chosen to join the group are said to display Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. I hope that Brian and Jan take note. I did not forget the Oxford comma.

There were grade eight students who spoke about each of the listed characteristics. They were well spoken and each spoke about their plans for next year. The pledge was repeated by the group in a rather chaotic way.

I pledge to uphold the high purposes of the National Junior
Honor Society to which I have been selected.
I will be true to the principles for which it stands.
And will always maintain and encourage the high standards
of scholarship, leadership service, and character.

The whole event was over in no time and we were out on the street. Liam was delighted with the brevity as he has so many long, long meetings.

Sheelagh and I were hungry. So we made our way with all haste to Martin's Tavern.

This is an historic Georgetown restaurant and watering hole and every trip we've said, "We must go in there." This was the trip. It is/has been the "local" for many a DC mover and shaker, such as Harry Truman, John Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Madeline Albright, Ben Bradlee, and the Supreme Court Justices, who sided with Brown in the landmark decision ending "equal but separate education",  discussed the wording of their unanimous decision around one of the tables. Across the room from where we were sitting was the Proposal booth where JFK proposed to Jackie. And the food was pretty decent as well.
