Yum, Yum, Pig Bum, Cabbage and Potatoes

We went to Waterford on Friday. The annual Waterford Harvest Festival was just getting underway. We love it when we stumble into things we didn't know were happening. The title, a children's rhyme, is their theme this year harking back to when Waterford was the centre of bacon making. We saw shopping bags emblazoned with this and set about tracking 2 down for us girls. The first person we approached said they weren't for sale only for publicity purposes. But we didn't take no for an answer and buy the end of the afternoon came away with our souvenirs from Waterford.

The history of Waterford was fascinating. It's the oldest town in Ireland, founded by the Vikings in the 900's. It became a famous shipbuilding centre which is why the Normans targeted it when they came to Ireland. The marriage between the Norman, Strongbow, and the Viking maiden, Aoisle, brought peace and prosperity to the town - especially after they set up their cider business.

Sheelagh took a lesson in archery at the lovely Medieval Museum. Every arrow hit the mark! We all enjoyed the 24 vintage Rolls Royce set up in the Cathedral Square.
The couple we talked to had shipped their 1911 beauty in a container from New Zealand for the month long tour of Ireland. The car parked next to them was from NSW. The ones across the sq. from New York and Washington states. We came away agreeing that we were a few Euros short to join the club - oh, and also, we were missing a Rolls.

We didn't do the tour of the Waterford crystal factory but enjoyed browsing the giftshop.

We finished up our day at the beautiful, thatched seaside village of Dunmore East. It had been a grey, damp day but we had such fun.

  1. thanks for the update but . . . you're pulling our collective leg. Mr. Norman Strongbow - a cider business? H.P Bulmer would like a word with you. I want to go to Dunsmore East. K
