How Much For The Blood Pudding?

For someone who has many embarrassing moments in his life, I added a good one on Monday. We were in the little village of Sneem where they sell award winning black pudding, otherwise known as blood pudding. This is a breakfast treat for me that none of the others like. In fact it’s a bit of a struggle to get them to let it into the kitchen. I had tracked down this butcher who had a certificate saying that his blood pudding was the, “Best In Ireland”. It didn’t seem to matter that the other butcher in town had a certificate saying the same thing. Anyway, I asked how much I owed him for my purchase and hauled out a handful of coins and held it out for him to pick through not realizing that my false teeth were sitting there in the middle of the coins.
Of course it didn’t help when, as I am prone to doing, I noticed the teeth and started to laugh very loudly. Anyway, I finally paid and got out of the shop and and staggered down the street in search of Sheelagh to tell her what had happened.

We have been living on the Kerry Peninsula in the small town of Waterville since Saturday. We arrived on Saturday afternoon. We had been a bit underwhelmed as we joined the famous touring trail called the Ring of Kerry at Kenmare. This trail attracts a slew of tourists and even this late in the season, a sunny Saturday brought out lots of drivers. The tiny road was busy and driving west from Kenmare was nerve stretching, and to make it worse, we couldn’t see for the high side hedges.

We were well along the south coast before the vistas began to open to the sea and rolling green fields of Ireland. From that point on we stopped whenever we could to ooh and ah and snap pictures.

It was well into the late afternoon before we rolled down the long hill into Waterville, to our lovely Stone Cottage nestled on the hillside.

From this home base we will go exploring the Ring Of Kerry over the next week. So as not to mess you up, this happened on the 12th of September. We’re going to try to catch up on out outings in a few short blogs. So here goes.

  1. I'm also catching up on the blogs - thanks for this! Oh George, trouble seems to follow you around - and no - I'm not referring to Sheelagh :).
