We went to see Rebus today. Or for you who don't enjoy Ian Rankin, it's Edinburgh. After our bungled trip on Sunday, this one worked smoothly. If we left after 9 am, we could both go and come home for 27.40 pounds. Before 9, it would be 40. so it was an easy decision. After 9 it was. The trip takes less than an hour, and we enjoyed the rolling scenery between cities.
Edinburgh is a lovely gray stone city with many familiar sites. It had been many years since we took our wee lads there. Dorian is very familiar with the various places. He seems to know where to get good food where ever we go.
This visit started with a great piece of apple pie in the cafe of St Giles Church of Scotland. This is better known as the spot where Beatrix was denied her ice cream and dined alone. We had a tour of the law courts, where the Scottish Parliament used to be before James the 6th of Scotland became James the 1st of England. We visited a beautiful suit store, something and Slater. They sell the most wonderful suits. We only came away with a pair of socks. Then we visited the National Library to see one of the first Bibles in English. There were also hand written notes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Up the street was the new National Museum which was made of beautiful stone. There was so much here that I can't tell you. Suffice to say it kept us interested for some time. We stopped to pay our respects to Greyfrier's Bobby who sits patiently on a pedestal across the street. I thought that Mutti would enjoy the name Angels With Bagpipes.
Lunch at Mum's Comfort Food was followed by a visit to the National Gallery. By then it was dark and quite cold, so we caught the train for home. A great day. We've walked many kilometres this trip.
