We decided that we would get up and on the streets early today. It was another beautiful day here in Palermo. The sun raised the temperature into the 20's by 9:30. We were out too early for our new favourite cafe. They were still closed when we arrived so we had to find a new, new favourite cafe, and we did without much effort. The coffee was wonderful. It was so wonderful in fact that they give you a little jug of hot water to calm it down a bit.

Then we set off to find the Basilica di San Francesco d' Assisi. This is, in part, a medieval church from 1277, and part baroque. The sculptures were so lovely in this church. Sheelagh said that she was beginning to recognise the virtues. I said it was well nie time she did I thought. The rose shaped window was very beautiful as well.

From there we went to the Palazzo Mirto. This is a palace that was lived in by the family until 1982. At that point they just handed the keys to the city and walked away. They left all the furniture and art in place. One can only assume that it was just too costly to maintain. It has an open courtyard in the middle that Sheelagh has always wanted.

We went to a restaurant in a nearby piazza for lunch and the food was outstanding. Sheelagh had linguine with pine nuts, slivered almonds, shrimp, swordfish and sheep cheese. I had breaded veal. Yum. We had a small moment of panic when I got my beltloop caught on the ornate restaurant chair and my wife was of no use as she laughed helplessly and I feared I would have to leave with a chair dangling from my posterior.

We stopped on our way to a park to pick up a soft shell cannolo with ricotta cheese to share as we walked.
What a great day.
