A Day Out

Yesterday we started off to the north from our little yellow cottage.

We had no real objective in mind, but the sun was shining and we felt like seeing the peninsula up there. The first place we discovered was in the town of Dunfanaghy. They have taken the ruins of a work house and turned it into a visitors centre and display.

We were given head sets and shown into a room set up with story boards and two very lifelike mannequins that caused my dear wife to scream and dance about. We heard the stories of the work house and how it worked. No “Undeserving person” was to be helped. Great pains were taken to keep those types out, and to make the place so unpleasant that those that were admitted would leave as soon as they could. Men, women, girls, boys and babies were separated from each other. No one could do a job that was being done on the outside for wages. A terrible place full of bad food and corporal punishment. Ironic, the dormitories for the men and women are now high priced holiday homes.

Upstairs we heard of Wee Hannah, a little girl who through sheer toughness survived her childhood and we followed her through adulthood and old age. This story was very moving and a testament to the human spirit.

We visited the waterfront of this town and had a look around before doing the loop drive around Horn Head,

stopping to wander around the peat bog and moorland enjoying the views out to sea.

Von is very keen on her bogs and had a good look around. Little fishing boats were plying the waters nearby.

There were ruins along that coast and the wonderful stone walls.

On our way home we went around the Bloody Forelands drive with its wonderful ocean views.

We were home quite early and had time for a little walk around our town and off to the pub up the street to watch the rather wonderful sunset.
