Borrowed Title, Lost In Austin

Three years ago, we ended our trip to Scotland in a castle - in the servants’ quarters - but still a castle. This time round, we couldn’t afford a castle but Von came up with a great alternative. We are ending our days in Knocknalosset House.

This is a vernacular farmhouse owned by the Landmark Trust of Ireland. Vernacular, we think, means, “In the style of the area, or the era.”.  Records show it was built in the early 1700’s but the first record listing a family name is in 1775.

There were only two families, the Irwins and then the Leinsters, who lived in the house after that. The Leinsters sold to the Trust in 2006 by which time the house was quite dilapidated but still with a lot of original features.

This year is the first year it has been open for renting.

In 1837, the house had attached 15 acres and 2 roods ( 1/4 acre). By 1857, it had 22 acres, 1 rood and 37 perches ( 1 square rod {25.29square metres}) (in a fish pond? and who lost the rood?) We feel we are living with the ghost of Jane Austen.
