When the boss returned I showed him and he said, "That was always not there. You are a very good person to have showed me this. A very good person." To which I could only respond with a humble smile and a soft, "Thank you, yes, thank you." And in my head I'm screaming, "Yes !!!!! " and doing a jubilant fist pump!
My dear wife just quietly shakes her head at me.
Now to yesterday. Technology is great. We watched the sermon at our church back home in White Rock. Then we took off over the hills farther south on the west coast. The first village we stopped at claims to have the oldest olive tree on the island. Well, if looks can be trusted, I'm prepared to believe them.
This lovely old thing was in the town square and was attracting quite a crowd of passers by. She was reported to be about 1500 years old which takes her back a bit. Quite cool I thought.
Speaking of asses. How's this? Two in one shot.
That picture was taken for Mrs Graham, who likes donkeys. He was tied across from the nice little taverna where we had lunch. The waiter was a friendly young man who had been born here, but had grown up in Australia. He told us that he very much wanted to stay here, but full time jobs were hard to find and he would have to return to Oz.
After touring about for a while we set off for home and passed a pomegranate tree.
That was the first time we saw them ripe.
Another thing we learned about was the "Ouzonium". It seems that following breakfast, the ladies of the island get on with their house chores and jobs, while the older gentlemen retire to participate in an ouzonium . This is done out of respect for Greek history. As the birthplace of democracy, these gents take time to sip ouzo and to discuss. I'm not totally sure what they discuss. Democracy and the state of the world, I guess. But it seems to involve some yelling at their passing acquaintances, who are gainfully employed.
My first time to read through your blog. It is all so interesting!! I'm glad you are having such a great time! School starts tomorrow ... feeling quite elated not to be part of the entire process! :)
ReplyDeleteLove the donkey! I can't believe your time in Greece is nearly over. We've enjoyed travelling with you - and although it's been fun - we've really wish we could have shared some of those amazing meals al fresco!
