So Long, Farewell

The sun shone again today. This was our last full day in Barcelona, so we trotted off for breakfast nearby. Cereal with fruit and yoghurt. Pretty healthy, eh? Then we hustled up to catch a #24 bus to Park Guell, begun in 1900 as a grand plan to house the wealthy of an up and growing Barcelona. A burgeoning upper class was all set with money and everything. So an engineer go hold of a wonderful plot of land overlooking the city with palm trees and parrots.

He laid out a series of triangular lots and waited. Too bad, the wealthy business types didn't come buying. Two lots were sold and that was it. So, his heirs sold it to the city and it was turned into a park.
Gaudi, yes the same guy again, got involved and he brought in some other artists and the results were pretty spectacular. No straight lines. Even the columns were slanted or angled or spiralled or made crooked. It is wonderful. Here are some pictures.

We had a good look around and then walked slowly back through the narrow streets to a small plaza where we tried to get lunch. It was 12:15 - lunch time, right? We were told we were an hour too early. We were forced to sit and watch the world go by. Such hardship. Then we made our way home and wearily climbed the 7 flights of stairs to our B&b. Having learned our lesson, we didn't have supper until 8 pm!
Tomorrow, we catch a cab to the cruise terminal and board the ship for Florida. We won't have internet on board so we are shutting the blog down. Thanks for joining us. It's been fun having you along for the ride.
