Gaudi - Part 1

We’ve visited a couple of places that are so entwined with a certain architect, you can’t help learning about them when you visit. Several years ago we visited Lanzarote with our good friends, Jim and Kathy Graham, and now all 4 of us could bore you with facts about Cesar Manrique. Glasgow equals Charles Rennie MacIntosh. In Barcelona it is Antoni Gaudi. Seven of his building are World Heritage sites. We started learning about him at his most famous,
The Sagrada Familia, the most visited site in all of Spain. Started in 1882, the design of this church was taken over by Gaudi in 1883. From 1915 until his death in 1926, he devoted all his time to this one project. It is projected to be finished in 2030. Gaudi’s models continue to be followed. The Nativity entrance, finished by Gaudi, is exuberant and full of life.

As per his instructions, the Passion entrance, finished early 2000’s is stark and somber.

The main entrance, Mercy, is being worked on now.
As are the final towers. It has been going on so long that the first parts are having to be re done in places. His main theme through out was that God’s creation, right down to the dung beetle on the Nativity door, praises and magnifies God.

  1. I would love to see this Cathedral! I love the thought that everything in God's creation praises and magnifies Him!
