Then we come back up and shower and find something for breakfast. The bread guy arrives at about 8:45 and we choose from breads and pastries that are still warm from the oven.
We are both working our way through a little pile of books that we brought with us. We chat to our hosts and neighbours. Oh, speaking of our hosts. Yesterday was St Dennis Day here and our lovely landlady arrived at the door with two plates of freshly made moussaka. We had this on our balcony. It was outstanding.
There was a warm rain storm for about an hour yesterday. This island, being on the east side of Greece, gets some rain during the summer and is the greenest of all the islands, we've been told. Mostly olive trees and Lombardy poplars.
The day passes with a gentle rhythm. If the room becomes too stuffy we move out to our place beneath the olive trees.
Or the deck in the sun.
At about 7 we wander over to the restaurant for dinner and by the time we finish the sun has gone down and it's pleasant to walk home in the cool.
From our deck we can watch the sun set and our tiny acropolis on the far hill is silhouetted against the sky. It's actually an abandoned house that never was finished, but who's being literal?
We've talked to various people who have taken the boat cruises that go to some of the more famous tourist sites and the reviews are lukewarm. We seem to be in the best spot. We do think that we will rent a car for a couple of days next week to explore the small villages in the centre of the island and to try a restaurant that has been recommended as being authentic, traditional greek food. But aside from that, we are happy here and plan to just relax for the time we have on Zakynthos. (The correct spelling I think)
Oh you poor things! How much more can you take?
