The Old Windmill

We have been very loyal to our restaurant down the road. But we decided to take a flutter on a place which our host recommended. The Old Windmill serves traditional Greek fare using many ingredients which come from their own farm and garden. And so on Tuesday this week Nikos loaded us into his 20 year old Mercedes and drove us up about 500 meters in altitude, about 5 Km in distance to visit the friendly owner who greeted us at the door and promised that we would be looked after.

The seating was arranged in a semicircular room which looked out over the Ionian Sea on this perfect sunny day.

We need to understand that eating in a Greek restaurant is done at a leisurely pace. The menus arrive promptly, but you are given plenty of time to look at them and make your choices. There are usually a couple of families with kids there and there's noise, laughter and cheerful chatter.  We made our choices of home raised lamb chops with Sheelagh's favourite oven roaster lemon potatoes, a feta cheese dish with honey and black sesame oil and a thick vegetable and bean soup. We thought that it was going to be a salad. But, hey, it was very good.

After a time we declared ourselves too full for dessert. So we sat and looked at the beautiful scenery until the owner came and declared that he would drive us home.

What a great experience. Tomorrow we're going across for a day on Kefalonia, the larger island to the north of us. Again we will not be at our usual restaurant for dinner. I'm afraid to think what will be said.  The last time we missed only one day and we were asked where we had been the day before.  Loyalty is everything to the Greeks.
